EASTERN EUROPE, Geto-Dacians. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.19 g, 2h). Obverse type of Q. Antonius Balbus, reverse type of Vergilius, Gargilius, and Ogulnius. After 83 BC. Laureate head of beardless Jupiter right / Figure driving quadriga right. Davis A/II (website M34); cf. Crawford 364/1 (for obv.) and 350A/2 (for rev.); Apulum XLIII, 39 (this coin). VF, toned.
From the RBW Collection. Ex Phillip Davis Collection (Gemini IX, 8 January 2012), lot 654.
From the Gemini sale: “The obverse prototype may seem surprising, but the lack of a beard can be explained as the result of a worn or misstruck model. Everything else fits perfectly, including the ‘knobs’ at he ends of the laurel wreath, quite diagnostic of 364/1.”
