FRANCE. Napoléon I (1804-1814). Æ Medal (41mm, 37.86 g, 12h). Napoléon seeks Asylum. By Bertrand Andrieu, 1815. Head of Napoléon right / Head of Hannibal left. Bramsen 1692. EF, scattered marks.

From the RBW Collection, purchased from Rauch, July 2004.

In 195 BC, seven years after Hannibal’s loss to the Romans at the Battle of Zama, the Carthaginian general went into voluntary exile. This issue alludes to Napoléon’s desire to seek asylum in England.
