THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid-late 1st century BC. AR Stater (25mm, 6.11 g, 11h). Petraios and Ptolemaios, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing laurel wreath / ΘEΣΣA ΛΩN, Athena Itonia right; ΠETP-AIOV above; ΠTOΛEMAIOΣ in exergue. BCD Thessaly II 887.2 var. (oak wreath). Good VF, lightly toned.

Petraios, strategos of the League, son of Themistogenes of Gyrton, was an ardent supporter of Julius Caesar (Caes., BC III, 35), and was executed by Brutus in 44 BC (Cic., Phil. 13. 33).
