KINGS of PAEONIA, Patraos. 335-315 BC. AR Tetradrachm (23mm, 12.91 gm). Laureate head of Apollo right / Horseman riding down fallen warrior; M above horse's head. SNG ANS 1032 (same obverse die); Sotheby's, "Paeonian Hoard," 303 (same dies). Toned, nice VF.
On this reverse die, this horseman's spear has pierced the fallen soldier's shield, and its sharp point is within a milimeter or two of piercing his neck. This is about as graphic a depiction of battle as this cataloguer has seen.
