LACONIA, Gythium. Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. Æ Assarion (21mm, 4.70 g, 3h). Struck circa AD 198-205. Laureate head right / The Dioscuri, each holding bridle of horse; A above, altar between. Unpublished in the standard references. Fine, brown surfaces, earthen deposits, minor edge irregularity.
From the J. S. Wagner Collection.
The Dioscuri type is perhaps only recorded for Caracalla (BCD Peloponnesos 973) and Geta (NCP p. 62; SNG Hunterian 370). This issue is particularly interesting in that it carries a numeral on the reverse to mark the denomination.
