59, Lot: 147. Estimate $100.
Sold for $160. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

GALBA. 68-69 AD. Æ As (27mm, 10.38 gm). Rome mint. Struck circa late summer 68 AD. Laureate head right / Ceres seated left, holding poppy, grain ear, and caduceus. Cf. RIC I 326 (obverse); RIC I 292 (reverse); Cohen 15, 20 (same). Fine, brown and green patina.

This specimen unites an earlier reverse with a later obverse. Given the state of affairs during the late summer of 68 AD, as Galba was pressing his march on Rome, it is not inconceivable that some at the mint may have been a bit distracted; thus this interesting type with historical overtones.
