All original dark brown leather on heavy boards, raised bands, gilt spines, marbled end pages and marbled fore edges on volume 4. Engraved portrait of the author, printed titles in red and black with engraved vignettes, engraved dedication vignette, finely engraved headpieces, tailpieces and initials, fine engravings of medals throughout the text. An important work. Bindings show some fairly substantial shelf wear, all spines cracked but still intact, volume 4 shows some insect holes on the cover. Internally the pages are remarkably fresh and free from any foxing or water spots.
