New Kingdom. Circa 1550-1070 BC. Steatite scarab (12x9mm). Face depicts Osiris, Horus, and Anubis, each holding staff, in procession of the Opening of the Mouth Ceremony. Also known as the Opening of the Mouth and Eyes, the ritual was performed to ceremoniously open the mouth and eyes of the deceased so that they were able to see, breathe, speak, eat and drink in the afterlife. A few minor chips. Pierced.
