THRACE, Pautalia. Geta, as Caesar. 198-209 AD. Æ 30mm (13.57 gm). Laureate head of Geta right / Scene of the mountainside sanctuary of Pautalia, centered on the main temple of Asklepios, surrounded by (starting at top, clockwise) a temple set within a grove of trees, a smaller temple, a shrine to a triad of goddesses, two more small temples and a grotto with statue (Tyche?). Unpublished in the major references, but the reverse scene appears on a bronze of Macrinus, Price and Trell fig. 29. VF, dark green patina.
One of the most complex architectural designs to appear on an ancient coin.
