Terra cotta kothon with red-brown ornamentation. Greek, Corinthian, circa 550-500 BC. Circular body on squat, flaring foot. Rim extending deeply into body. Decorated with red concentric circles and a series of short dashes at high point of rim.
Height: 5.6cm. Intact with some minor loss of pigment. Cf. CVA Heidelberg, pl. 19, 3.
Ex Professor William Kendrick Pritchett Collection.
A container for perfume or other precious goods, the kothon’s deeply set rim aided against spillage. This type of vessel appears to have been common for temple dedications.
