Exquisite Workmanship
Gilt Silver Statuette of Jupiter

371, Lot: 1286. Estimate $4000.
Sold for $4750. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Gilt silver statuette of Jupiter. Roman, 1st-2nd centuries AD. A solid cast statuette of exquisite workmanship. The figure’s attributes are now missing, but the posture is consistent with images of Jupiter holding a scepter in his right hand and cradling his fulmen (thunderbolt) in his left. He is fully draped, crowned with laurels, and wears finely-detailed sandals. The piece was originally gilt, with remaining traces of gilding giving the figure a subdued iridescence. Toned. Height: 57mm; weight: 37.45g.
