Bronze steelyard scale with balance weight. Roman, 1st-2nd centuries AD. The balance beam, chains and hooks appear to be intact, the balance weight in the form of a male bust is from around the same period, but possibly not found together with the scale. Very similar scales were found in the excavations at Pompey. Length of scale beam: 29.6cm; length of chains and hooks: approx 33.5 cm. Green patina. Cf. B. Kisch, Scales & weights: a historical outline (1965), pp. 59ff.
