This coin commemorates Hadrian's visit to Spain in 122-123 AD. The families of Trajan and Hadrian, who were kinsmen, were Italian emigrants to Spain. Spain itself, one of Rome's chief sources of silver, was an important, though troubled province. In 135 AD, the problems that arose there contributed Hadrian's return to Italy, effectively ending his touring.
