The Capitoline Triad at Antinoöpolis

372, Lot: 355. Estimate $100.
Sold for $475. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

EGYPT, Antinoöpolis. 2nd-3rd century. PB Amulet (26mm, 6.53 g, 12h). Draped bust of Antinoüs right, wearing hem-hem crown / The Capitoline Triad: Zeus enthroned facing, being crowned by Victory held in left hand; to either side, Juno and Minerva seated facing center, each holding scepter. Unpublished. Fine, thick gray-brown patina, some roughness. Very rare.

Ex London Ancient Coins 33 (28 February 2014), lot 240.

Faint evidence of the original suspension loop is evident at 12h, suggesting that this piece was made to be worn, rather than for currency use, as the other Egyptian tesserae were. Stylistically, the exceptionally detailed portrait of Antinous and the presence of a broad beaded border serve to further distinguish this piece from the currency issues.
