M. Furius L.f. Philus. 119 BC. AR Denarius (19mm, 3.82 gm). Laureate head of Janus / Roma standing left holding spear and crowning trophy of Gallic arms and carnuces; star above. Crawford 281/1; Sydenham 529; Furia 18. Toned, good VF, flan flaws, oblong flan, light porosity.

From the Tony Hardy Collection.

In 120 BC, Q. Fabius Maximus defeated the Allobroges, whose subjugation lead to the annexion of Gallia Narbonensis as a new Roman province. This denarius, which commemorates the event, is one of the few in the Republican series to refer to a contemporary event.
