SICILY, Syracuse. Hieron I. 478-466 BC. AR Tetradrachm (24mm, 17.10 g, 10h). Struck circa 478-475 BC. Charioteer driving quadriga right; above, Nike flying right, crowning horses / Diademed head of Arethousa right; four dolphins around. Boehringer Series VIIIb, – (V64/R187E); HGC 2, 1306; Randazzo 307–9. Near VF, toned, die break on reverse. Rare die combination.

From the Colin E. Pitchfork Collection, purchased from Classical Numismatic Group, 4 December 2003.

Boehringer assigned this reverse die to series XI apparently based on style, as the obverse of the single specimen he knew of with that die was unillustrated. However, the three pieces in the Randazzo hoard with this die are paired with an obverse die securely linked to his earlier series VIIIb coins.
