KINGS of MACEDON. Antigonos I Monophthalmos. As Strategos of Asia, 320-306/5 BC. AR Tetradrachm (24mm, 16.98 g, 12h). In the name and types of Alexander III. Sardes mint(?). Struck circa 318-315 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; A below throne. Unpublished. VF, lightly toned. Extremely rare, none in CoinArchives or Pella database (ANS).
From the collection of Will Gordon.
There are a variety of issues in Price that have an A control below the throne, but the style and fabric of this piece is significantly different from most of these. The high relief, thick flan, and portrait style all indicate a mint in Asia Minor or the east in the late 4th century. The absence of the royal title, though, discounts an eastern issue, which typically have the title during this period. Among the issues in Asia Minor, the characteristics of the coin are compatible with the issues of Sardes, which has a variety of issues with an A below the throne. However, these issues all have an additional control in the left field, which the present piece does not. Nonetheless, Sardes seems the be the best candidate for this issue.
