CELTIC, Durotriges. Uninscribed. Circa 65 BC-AD 45. Pale AV Stater (19mm, 5.44 g, 8h). Cranborne Chase (Durotrigan E) type. Devolved head of Apollo right / Disjointed horse left; pellets above, pellet below, pellet in lozenge above tail, zigzag and pellet pattern between two parallel exergue lines. Van Arsdell 1235-1; ABC 1257; SCBC 365. EF, toned.

In the references, these coins are considered AR (silver) staters, but ABC does note that the earliest issues contained “a little gold.” The quantity of gold in the present piece is high enough to give the appearance of a base gold to the surfaces.
