ANGLO-SAXON, Archbishops of Canterbury. Æthelheard. 793-805. AR Penny (10mm, 0.40 g). Canterbury mint. Struck 797/8-805. Barred AR within circle / Barred Mercian M; pellets around; all within circle. Naismith C22.2 (same dies as illustration); SCBI –; BMC –; North 234; SCBC 886A var. (EP not AR in center of obverse). VF, deeply toned, marginal legends cut off, only center remaining. Extremely rare, only one example in Naismith (in the Vatican), and one in CoinArchives that is the sole example in EMC, no. 2010.0309 (both from same die pair as the present coin).
Interestingly, EMC 2012.0070 is a coin of the similar issue with EP in the center of the obverse that also has been cut down like the present coin.
