THRACE, Odessos. Circa 225-200 BC. AV Stater (19.5mm, 8.44 g, 12h). In the name and types of Lysimachos. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΛYΣIMAXOY, Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, transverse spear in background; OΔH monogram to inner left, KOI in exergue. Petac & Vilcu dies O3/R6; Topalov, Odesos 22; AMNG II 2120; Müller 238. EF, underlying luster, sight die wear on obverse. Very rare.

Petac & Vilcu date these staters to the Third Syrian War (246-241 BC), but the evidence supporting their theory is not secure. On the contrary, the numerous Alexander-type issue that share control marks with these Lysimachi are securely dated to the late-third century by multiple hoards (see, e.g., C. Marinescu and C. Lorber, “The “Black Sea” Tetradrachm Hoard” in Studia Prokopov).
