Aelius. Caesar, AD 136-138. Æ As (25mm, 13.13 g, 5h). Rome mint. Struck under Hadrian, AD 137. Bare head right / Concordia(?) seated left, feeding serpent out of patera; serpent coiled around altar before her. RIC II 1070 (Hadrian) var. (serpent coiled around altar). In NGC encapsulation graded XF, Strike: 5/5, Surface: 3/5 (light smoothing noted).
An interesting reverse type, most likely the result of an engraver’s error, as the reverse legend states CONCORD (in the exergue), but the type is Salus feeding a serpent coiled around an altar.
