KINGS of PERSIS. Baydād (Bagadat). Early 3rd century BC. AR Tetradrachm (28mm, 16.37 g, 3h). Istakhr (Persepolis) mint. Head right, with short beard, mustache, and earring, wearing kyrbasia with flaps tied behind / Aramaic legend: traces of
br and
bgdt (= “son [of] Baydad”) downward to right,
bgwrt (=”Bayward”) to left of altar,
prtrk’ zy ’lhw’ (= “frataraka of the gods”) in exergue,
bgwrt (=”Bayward”) upward to left, fire temple of Ahura-Mazda; to left, Baydād standing right; standard to right. K&M 2/3 var. (rev. legend); Alram 515 = DeMorgan pl. 27, 4 (same dies); Sunrise 560 var. (same); Hess-Divo 326, lot 55 (same dies, but an earlier die state). Good VF, toned, patches of thick encrustation, cleaning scratches, small die break across nose on portrait. Rare.
