PLANTAGENET. Edward II. 1307-1327. AR Penny (18mm, 1.49 g, 6h). New coinage, class 10cf3a. Canterbury mint. Struck circa mid 1307-circa early 1309. Crowned facing bust / Long cross pattée; trefoils in quarters. Cf. SCBI 39 (North), 640 (lacking die flaw); North 1042/1; SCBC 1412. VF.
From the William B. Porter Collection.
This unusual coins appears to have an extra S stamped in the obverse die over the left fleur of the crown. Additionally, the hYB has slipped, obscuring the initial cross. This is perhaps a result of a lamination in the obverse die folding over. Mint workers apparently used an S punch to secure the damaged section to the intact part of the die.
