SCOTLAND. Charles I. 1625-1649. AR Forty Shillings (21mm, 1.71 g, 6h). Third coinage, first (Briot’s) issue. Edinburgh mint. Struck circa 1637-1642. Crowned bust left; behind, XL with three lozenges around, small B at end of legend, pellet stops / Crowned thistle with leaves; B at beginning of legend and above left side of crown, lozenge stops. Murray obv. c, rev. f; Burns –; SCBI –; SCBC 5575 and 5577 var. (not listed with B both before and after legend on reverse). VF, toned, large edge split. Very rare variety with two B’s on reverse, none in Burns or Richardson, nor CoinArchives, Murray notes an example in the National Museum in Edinburgh.
