Triton XX, Lot: 772. Estimate $10000.
Sold for $9500. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Commodus. AD 177-192. Bimetallic Medallion (39mm, 59.68 g, 12h). Rome mint. Struck AD 187-188. M COMMODVS ANTONINVS PIVS FELIX AVG BRIT, laureate and cuirassed bust left, slight drapery and balteus over shoulder / P M TR P XIII IMP VIII COS V PP, MON AVG in exergue, the Tres Monetae (gold, silver, and bronze), each holding balance scale in right hand and cornucopia in left, that in the center standing on low base. Gnecchi –; MIR 18, 1127-1/46; Banti 224. VF, brown surfaces. Very rare, particularly with left-facing bust.

Ex Helios 3 (29 April 2009), lot 155.

The Tres Monetae appear on sestertii of Commodus, but the medallic types differ in that they give the central figure, presumably the personification of gold, greater prominence than the other two.
