Research Coins: Feature Auction

Triton XX, Lot: 1458. Estimate $500.
Sold for $300. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

CELTIC, Durotriges. Uninscribed. Circa 65 BC-AD 45. Pale AV Stater (19mm, 5.43 g, 8h). Cranborne Chase (Durotrigan E) type. Head of Apollo right, devolved to wreath and crescents / Disjointed horse left; pellets above, pellet below, pellet in lozenge above tail, zigzag and pellet pattern between two parallel exergue lines. Van Arsdell 1235-1; ABC 2157 (‘Silver Stater’); cf. SCBC 365 (‘Silver Stater’). EF, toned.

From the Kallman Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 240 (8 September 2010), lot 6.

The higher weight and gold content of this piece clearly place this coin at the earliest stage of this large issue that quickly devolves into silver and, later, billon. While Van Arsdell’s general listing for his 1235-1 type encompasses all metal types, ABC and SCBC only lists the silver and billon.
