ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of Mercia. Coenwulf. 796-821. AR Penny (19.5mm, 1.31 g, 6h). Group III–IV. Portrait type. Mint in East Anglia (Ipswich?); Lul, moneyer. Struck circa 800-821. + COИVVLF REX (inverted Mercian m), diademed bust right / + LVL in angles of long cross fourchée, with beaded teardrop facing inwards around each letter. Naismith E10.1h (this coin); SCBI 2 (Hunterian), 335 var. (obv. legend); BMC 7–43 var. (same); North 362; SCBC 919 (this coin illustrated). VF, minor edge loss at 12 o’clock. Rich old tone. Very rare.
