ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of Wessex. Edward the Elder. 899-924. AR Penny (21mm, 1.57 g, 4h). Bust Diademed (BD) type (BMC iii). Mercia North West mint (probably Chester); Dudig, moneyer. Early period II, circa 903-910. + EADVVEARD REX, diademed bust left / DVDIG/MON in two lines; + · + between, trefoil above and below. CTCE 16 (this coin referenced, illustrated); SCBI 9 (Ashmolean), 306 - same rev. die; cf. BMC 77; North 651; SCBC 1084 (this coin illustrated). EF, lightly toned. A most handsome example with a characterful portrait. Very rare.
