Research Coins: Electronic Auction

387, Lot: 190. Estimate $100.
Sold for $400. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 600-550 BC. EL Hemihekte – Twelfth Stater (7mm, 1.19 g). Lydo-Milesian standard. Floral or stellate pattern / Incuse square. Cf. SNG von Aulock 7776 (trite); otherwise unpublished in the standard references. VF, a few deposits.

There is a group of electrum coins with a very similar obverse type that is tentatively attributed to Erythrai (see CNG 100, lot 81 [incorrectly citing the von Aulock piece as a part of the group]), but those coins have a quadripartite incuse, which is found on the herakles-head electrum from Erythrai, while this coin and the von Aulock trite have a plain punch. Moreover, the electrum at Erythrai are all struck on the Phokaic standard, while this and the von Aulock trite are on the Lydo-Milesian standard.
