393, Lot: 946. Estimate $1000.
Sold for $1000. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Bronze appliqué in the form of a bearded male bust, probably a philosopher. Roman, 2nd-3rd centuries AD. Bronze bust of a baldheaded and bearded male, with pensive gaze and slightly bulbous nose. Back of bust filled in with lead (44x48mm). Green patina with earthen deposits.

It is unclear what the lead filling is for. The piece weights 118g – could the lead have been added to raise the piece to the weight of 5 unciae?
