THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid-late 1st century BC. AR Stater (24mm, 5.39 g, 12h). Petraios and Ptolemaios, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing laurel wreath / ΘΕΣΣΑ-ΛΩΝ, Athena Itonia advancing right, holding shield and preparing to hurl spear; ΠETP-AIOV above spear; ΠTOΛEMAIO[Σ] in exergue. BCD Thessaly I –; BCD Thessaly II 887.2 var. (oak wreath); HGC 4, 210 var. (same). VF, toned, minor roughness.

Petraios, strategos of the League, son of Themistogenes of Gyrton, was an ardent supporter of Julius Caesar (Caes., BC III, 35), and was executed by Brutus in 44 BC (Cic., Phil. 13. 33).
