402, Lot: 43. Estimate $200.
Sold for $340. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Alexander III – Seleukos I. Circa 324/3-300 BC. AR Tetradrachm (27mm, 17.17 g, 6h). Uncertain eastern mint. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; no control marks. Price 4004(?). VF, lightly toned, a few light marks. Very rare.

There are a number of issues that Price lists that have no control marks. Assignment to one of these can only be substantiated by comparing style. The style of this issue is clearly eastern, but does not match any of the unmarked issues that Price gives to any established mint. Thus, Price 4004 appears to be the only possible match, but that issue is not illustrated in Price, and he references a piece in the ANS that does not seem to exist since there are no examples of that type listed in the Pella.
