CILICIA, Tarsus. Gordian III. AD 238-244. Æ (35mm, 23.63 g, 6h). Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Two Ciliarch crowns set on table. SNG BN 1650; SNG Levante 1135. Fine, green and brown patina.
Such crowns were worn by Ciliarch or Cilicarch, the High Priest of Cilicia who presided over provincial temples dedicated to certain emperors. The different busts that decorate this crown represent the various emperors who were honored with temples throughout the region.
