STUART. Charles I. 1625-1649. Gilt AR Electrotype Pattern 5 Broad (39mm, 31.83 g, 12h). By Thomas Rawlins (or Abraham Vanderdort?). Bust left / Crowned coat-of-arms; crowned C R flanking. Brooker –; MI 374/270. EF, toned.

From the RAJ Collection, purchased from Davisson’s 1999.

Moments before he kneeled at the executioner’s block, the Charles turned to his friend, Bishop Juxon, and presented him with a large gold coin. In 1896, this very piece appeared in a Sotheby’s auction, pedigreed by descent back to Juxon himself and the very hand of the doomed monarch. (For more discussion, see E.R. Nutbourne, “The Juxon Medal – a unique coin,” in NumCirc XCVI.6 [July/August 1988])
