Gold earring with portrait of Julia Domna. Roman, eastern empire, 3rd century AD. Earring with crescent-shaped plate decorated with two birds (doves?) formed by delicate filigree work. They stand to either side of a repousse portrait of Julia Domna right within a wire border framed by four annulets. Six chains hang from loops attached to the bottom of the plate, each with a terminal pendant that probably would have originally carried a bead. Maximum length: 51mm; weight: 2.56g. A light dusting of earthen deposits. Nicely preserved and very interesting.
