CAROLINGIANS. Louis 'le Pieux' (the Pious). As Emperor Louis I, 814-840. AR Denier (20mm, 1.75 g, 2h). Class 1. Metallum (Melle) mint. Struck 814-819. + HLVDOVVICVS IMP ΛVG, laureate and draped bust right / + METALLVM, obverse and reverse dies; mallet to right and left. Cf. Coupland, Money, Class I, 3 (obol); Depeyrot 607; M&G 396; MEC 1, 758. Good VF, toned. Very rare.
