AV Medal (26mm, 10.30 g, 12h). Maryland Institute for the Promotion of the Mechanical Arts, Baltimore. Presented to George H. Gilbert, 1852, for silk work flannel. Dated 1852. MARYLAND INSTIT. FOR THE PROMO. OF THE MECH. ARTS., female figure standing facing on shoreline, her right hand holding an olive branch and sword balanced on ground, and her uplifted left hand is holding scales above her head; fasces and barrels on ground around her; ship to right and two ships in distance to left; BALTIMORE below / To/Geo. H. Gilbert, /Worc. Mass./For Silk Work/Flannel/deposited by/Murdoch & Dall/1852 in eight lines. Cf. Julian AM-32 for later medals struck at the U.S. Mint after 5 November 1857. EF, light marks and hairline scratches. Rare.


Founded in 1826, the Maryland Institute for the Promotion of the Mechanical Arts in Baltimore still exists today as the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).
