JUDAEA, Sepphoris (Diocaesarea). Trajan. AD 98-117. Æ (23mm, 10.98 g, 12h). [TPAIANOΣ AVTO] KPATΩP EΔΩ[KEN], laureate head right / Palm tree; ΣΕΠ-ΦΩ/ΡΗ-ΝΩΝ in two lines to either side of trunk. RPC III 3937; Rosenberger 4; Sofaer 2. Good VF, dark green patina with light earthen highlights/deposits, some minor roughness.


The obverse legend translates as “Trajan the emperor gave.” Trajan’s issues from Sepphoris all feature this remarkable legend, which indicates that the emperor granted Sepphoris the right to strike coinage.
