SELEUKID KINGS of SYRIA. Seleukos I. 312-280 BC. AR Hemidrachm (12mm, 1.87 gm). Uncertain Mint 6A? Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress /
SELEU[KOU] right, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and sceptre;
S left. Cf. SNG Spaer 73 (monogram); SC 70; cf. Newell, WSM 1248 (
S and •). Toned VF.
Although this example is worn, it is certain that this is an Alexander-type hemidrachm of the early years of the reign of Seleukos I attributed (tentatively) to Uncertain Mint 6A. In addition to the name of Seleukos, our coin shares similar features which are salient for the attributed mint: the S of which only the leading edge is visible; the • which Newell's example displays to the right of the eagle is not visible on this example in the same location and may be before the S.
