THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid-late 1st century BC. AR Stater (26mm, 5.73 g, 12h). Petraios and Ptolemaios, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath / ΘΕΣΣΑ-ΛΩΝ, Athena Itonia advancing right, holding shield and preparing to hurl spear; ΠΕΤΡ-ΑΙΟV above, ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΣ in exergue. BCD Thessaly II 887.2; HGC 4, 210. VF. Struck on a broad flan.

Petraios, strategos of the League, son of Themistogenes of Gyrton, was an ardent supporter of Julius Caesar (Caes., BC III, 35), and was executed by Brutus in 44 BC (Cic., Phil. 13. 33).
