BRUTTIUM, Kroton. Circa 420-376 BC. AR Nomos (6.81 gm). Time of Pyrrhos. Eagle standing right on thunderbolt, head reverted; F-[I] above, herm on right holding phiale and caduceus / Tripod; Nike flying on left placing wreath on tripod. Attianese 128; Jameson 431 (this coin); SNG ANS 409 (same dies); HN Italy 2181. Attractively toned EF, flan a bit short. ($750)

Ex R. Jameson Collection, 431; Sir Arthur Evans Collection.

The eagle of Kroton, seen on earlier coins perched on a stag's head or an olive branch, is on this issue standing astride a thunderbolt. The thunderbolt was the symbol of Zeus Dodonaios, emblem of the kingdom of Epeiros and badge of Pyrrhos, recently come to rescue Italy from the designs of expanding Rome.
