KINGS of MACEDON. Philip II. 359-336 BC. AR Tetradrachm (14.31 gm). Amphipolis mint. Struck 315-295 BC. Laureate head of Zeus right / Youth on horseback right, holding palm;
L and torch below, kantharos under raised foreleg. Le Rider pl. 47, 27; SNG ANS 803 (same dies). Toned, good VF. ($500)
This issue was struck concurrently with a series of Alexander-type coinage at Amphipolis. Price believed that the Alexander-type tetradrachms were probably struck for Lysimachos by Kassander, who was in nominal control of the mint at this time, and that the L probably refers to Lysimachos. This theory also comports with this series of Philip II-type tetradrachms, as Lysimachos is also known to have issues of Philip II 1/5 tetradrachms from Amphipolis containing his name and symbol.
