As part of the Spanish attempt to quell the Dutch Revolt, Alessandro Farnese laid siege to the city of Brussel. An important economic center and of importance to the rebels, Brussel held out for almost a year. Unlike his predecessor, however, Farnese did not engage in a brutal reprisal against the city’s inhabitants.
