Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin; c/m: prow right with dolphin terminal, ΠY above, all within incuse circle / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; control marks worn off or off flan. For similar pieces with this c/m type, see M. Thompson, “A Countermarked Hoard from Büyükçekmece” in MN VI (1954). Fair, toned, test cut. Very rare with Büyükçekmece type countermark.

From the Colin E. Pitchfork Collection, purchased from Guido Bernardi, 8 January 1998, possibly from the Buyukcekmece Hoard.

Byzantion and Kalchedon applied these prow type countermarks for a limited time in the second half of the third century BC, prior to their striking of autonomous silver. The Propontis Hoard also contained two examples with this countermark type.
