THRACE, Maroneia. After 146 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.89 gm). Wreathed head of young Dionysos right / Dionysos standing half-left, holding grapes and narthex stalks, cloak wrapped around left arm; monogram (cut over another monogram) to left. Schönert-Geiss 976 var. (V1/R-, unlisted reverse die). Toned, good VF, rough spot on reverse. Unpublished monogram. Extremely rare first issue without "Dionysos Soter". ($4000)
Schönert-Geiss knew of only 2 examples of this first issue, both with a different monogram. The third known example, from the same dies as the present specimen, appeared in Sternberg XXXIV (22-23 October 1998), lot 24.
