ISLANDS off IONIA, Chios. Circa 270-220 BC. AR Tetradrachm (30.5mm, 16.71 g, 12h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, sphinx seated left above ΞE(Y?); Π below throne. Bauslaugh, Posthumous, Series 28, dies 35/73 corr. (control mark); Price 2359 corr. (same); HGC 6, 1132. VF, toned, some porosity, die wear. Extremely rare, only one cited by Bauslaugh (the only piece in Pella), none in CoinArchives.

From the Colin E. Pitchfork Collection, purchased from Freeman & Sear, 17 January 2004.

All the references cite simply ΞE below the sphinx, but it is clear from this piece, as well as the ANS coin (in Pella), that there is another letter to the right, either an I or, more likely, a Y.
