EASTERN EUROPE, Imitations of Alexander III of Macedon. 3rd century BC. AR Tetradrachm (27mm, 17.12 g, 8h). Imitating an uncertain Macedon/Greece mint issue of Kassander or Antigonos II Gonatas in the name and types of Alexander III. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; monograms in left field and below throne. For prototype, cf. Price 817. SNG Copenhagen 864 (same dies). VF, lightly toned, minor flan flaws on reverse.

From the Colin E. Pitchfork Collection. Ex Triton VI (14 January 2003), lot 1514 (part of).

Price lists the Copenhagen piece as an official issue, but the style of that (and the present coin) is significantly different from the style of the examples in Pella and Meydancikkale 1964 (Price’s notation of 1622 is erroneous); the former are crude, the latter are quite refined.
