THESSALY, Gonnos. Mid-late 4th century BC. Æ Dichalkon (17mm, 5.88 g, 10h). Head of nymph right, wearing earring / [ΓΟΝΝE]-ΩΝ, lion standing right. Rogers 226; BCD Thessaly II 76.2; HGC 4, 162. VF, brown surfaces.
From the BCD Collection.
A note from BCD from the Triton sale: One may assume that the lions were a threat to the sheep population at Gonnos and having one on the coins would be a useful reminder for the shepherds to watch out for them and at the same time an attempt to exorcise them.
