SAMARIA. Circa 375-333 BCE. AR Obol (0.62 gm). Bridled horse right; Aramaic 'RY' / Winged sphinx with head of Persian king; Aramaic 'R' (Yeroboam?), all within dotted incuse square. Meshorer & Qedar 27 var. (see below). Good VF. ($600)
M&Q 27 has a "Y" above the sphinx's wing, which is not present on this specimen. The catalogue gives the legend as YD, while the text suggests YR for Yeroboam, a known name of the period. Aramaic "D" and "R" in this period are virtually identical.
