SAMARIA. Circa 375-333 BCE. AR Obol (0.60 gm). Winged griffin bringing down stag right / Two figures, one nude, the other draped, standing facing, thymiaterion between them; all within dotted square. Meshorer & Qedar 134. Toned, good VF. ($300)
The obverse of this coin is similar to the drachms of Ariarathes I of Cappadocia (Simonetta 1), and the reverse is derived from the staters of Datames of Tarsos (cf. SNG Levante 83). Ariarathes' reign (333-322 BC) followed the Persian period, thus his coinage and this obol presumably found their inspiration from a common earlier source.
